Wireless social networking integrated on mobile phones |
 |
With social media now one of the big mobile drivers, Hutchison has set out to attract mobile socialites by integrating social media features right into the wireless handset.
With millions of users accessing social media via their mobiles, Hutchison Whampoa launched its new handset subsidiary, INQ, and unveiled its first device, the INQ1 - already being referred to as the first 'Facebook phone'.
The handset, which is available exclusively in the UK from mobile operator 3, integrates Facebook, Skype, Windows Live Messenger and Last.fm.
With its strong following of over 120 million users worldwide, popular social networking site Facebook is at the core of the phone's user experience. The INQ1 is the first device that has a real-time interactive, ‘live contact book’ with friends’ online status and Facebook profile pictures displayed against their contact details.
The handset has a one-click access and live updates pushed direct to the front screen of the device and allows users to directly upload pictures to their Facebook profile from its 3.2 megapixel camera.
"More than 15 million Facebook users currently access the site through their mobile devices. This number has doubled over the past six months, and we expect it to continue to grow as people become even more familiar with handsets like the INQ1,” said Mark Zuckerberg, the 24-year-old founder of Facebook.
The phone offers customized RSS feeds, free Skype-to-Skype calling and unlimited free instant messenger capabilities.
This is not the first time that Skype and 3 have collaborated on integrating their service directly on the handset.
Over a year ago, 3 was the first operator to enable voice over Internet calling with Skype and the first to launch a dedicated Skype mobile phone. “With more than a million minutes of Skype-to-Skype calls each day on 3 mobiles in the UK, we are delighted by the rapid growth in Skype usage on mobiles said Scott Durchslag, COO for Skype.
The phone is priced competitively in order to attract users to mobile Internet says Frank Meehan, CEO of INQ at the launch event in London. "I'm not here to compete with the iPhone or Blackberry. I think they're perfect. I'm here to compete with all the other handsets,” he claimed.
The device was developed by INQ in partnership with Qualcomm, using the San Diego, California, company's BREW platform to enable the applications to work with core handset features.
