HSPA and LTE in 2.6GHz Frequencies based on Ericsson Technology

Ericsson HSPA and LTE Technologies to be deployed in 2.6GHz Spectrum
Ericsson announced it is ready to deploy HSPA and LTE technology in the 2.6GHz spectrum. The winners of Sweden’s 2.6GHz spectrum auction, along with Ericsson will deploy the advanced mobile networks.

The auction, conducted by Swedish Post and Telecom Agency, is the first of its kind that provides license according to the harmonized band arrangement defined by the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT). The allocation of harmonized spectrum bands helps operators by securing them with standardized terminals that facilitates roaming facility between countries for their customers.

It is expected that, in the near future, the 2.50-2.69GHz band will be one of the largest spectrum resources for mobile broadband services. This spectrum has the capacity to allow multiple operators that can deploy technologies to utilize wide channels, preferred for the deployment of LTE technologies.

CEPT came up with a band plan that incorporated 2x70MHz of paired FDD (Frequency Division Multiplexing) spectrum separated by 50MHz of unpaired spectrum for FDD downlink or TDD (Time Division Multiplexing). The band plan was created in order to make the band available from 2008, dependent on increasing market demands.

Sweden is said to be the first country to auction the 2.6GHz band; LTE and HSPA are the preferred technologies for its use. Ericsson (News - Alert) products and solutions support HSPA and LTE on the 2.6GHz band.

“All the pieces of the puzzle are now in place, with harmonized spectrum and licensing all backed by Ericsson products and solutions that support HSPA and LTE on the 2.6GHz band,” said Ulf Ewaldsson, vice president and head of Product Area Radio at Ericsson.

LTE and HSPA technologies enables customers to enjoy advanced market user experience that can increase the demands of applications such as mobile video, blogging, advanced games, rich multimedia telephony, and various professional services.

Ericsson’s HSPA mobile broadband solution enables data download speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps and upload speeds of 1.4Mbps. It is HSPA is 20 times faster than standard GSM/GPRS connections. This advanced technology allows operators to increase their system capacity tremendously and also decreases response times for interactive services. The company facilitates HSPA support on many frequency bands that range from 850MHz to 2.6GHz.

Ewaldsson added: “Operators, authorities, and end users can be confident that the CEPT band plan is the most attractive route to future mobile broadband capability.”

Ericsson’s solutions that support HSPA and LTE technologies enable operators to leverage their network investments by providing optimal voice communication and mobile broadband services. The technology supports channel bandwidths of 1.4-20MHz and provides cost-efficient solutions. Ericsson LTE supported device can reach up to 150 Mbps speed.

Ericsson’s scalable architecture enables seamless network expansion and encourages adoption of broadband, regardless of the legacy technologies already present. The company’s offerings for the 2.6GHz band are based on its multi-standard RBS 3000 and RBS 6000 series.

Ericsson RBS 3000 base stations support WCDMA/HSPA/LTE, and the RBS 6000 series supports GSM/EDGE/WCDMA/HSPA/LTE. These energy-efficient base stations facilitate low-cost migration and easy network integration. Ericsson says they are also the smallest base stations available today.

Following in Sweden’s footsteps, auctions of the 2.6GHz band in Austria, Netherlands, Italy, and the UK are scheduled for 2008.

New 3G iPhone from Apple
On 3G data connectivity Jobs said the new handset can download an email attachment in a third of time it took the previous model, not exactly 1.8Mb/s let alone 7.2Mb/s wireless internet. Yet Apple claimed the iPhone is HSDPA-capable. Still, faster data connection if no coverage from a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Nortel is betting on LTE as future wireless technology
Nortel Networks to put "main wireless R&D resources" into LTE (Long Term Evolution) - 4G a fourth-generation technology standard for mobile wireless communication. The company enlisted Israel's Alvarion Ltd. as a partner in creating products using WiMax, a rival wireless technology.

WiMAX high-speed wireless data network
WMAX is building a high-speed data network using the IEEE802.16e WiMAX technology with connection speed many times higher than those currently available in 3G.
