Sprint/Clearwire in 12 billion WiMax joint venture.
Sprint Nextel and Clearwire Communications are close to announcing a $12 billion WiMax joint venture, the WSJ is reporting.
The story says Sprint will merge its wireless broadband unit with Clearwire; the combined companies will received $3.2 billion in outside financing, including $1.05 billion from Comcast, $1 billion from Intel, $550 million from Time Warner Cable, $500 million from Google and $100 million from privately held Bright House.
The combined company will use the Clearwire name, and offer both voice and wireless broadband services. The cable partners will be able to resell wireless service under their own brands.
Intel wants is betting big on WiMAX and hopes that WiMAX processors will become a standard technology in every laptop, just like it is now WiFi for wireless networks at home and business offices.

Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), Telefonica Espana andHuawei Technologies today announced the completion of a 3G UMTS andHSDPA field trial using 900 MHz spectrum in Talarrubias, located inthe Extremadura region of Spain. The trial results validated thatUMTS can co-exist with GSM at 900 MHz. Furthermore, it was proventhat the propagation advantage of 900 MHz may be used to extend thesignificant spectral efficiency gains of UMTS for voice and datacoverage relative to 2100 MHz that is currently used in European 3Gmarkets.
