Job Title: Optical IP Network Architect
General Position Description
The Optical IP Network Architect, will participate in defining and monitoring long and short term strategy and architecture for the National Optical Transport Network and Regional IPTV distribution networks.
This position will work closely with the other Technology Strategy personal and teams from Planning and Engineering to evolve the optical transport network at the national, regional and metro level and ensure this evolution is both economically and technically coherent in relation to the service layers that depend on optical transport (IP, Ethernet, SONET, etc). Additionally, this position will play a role in helping to define the IPTV distribution architecture and strategy as IPTV initiatives continues to mature.
Scope of Work
Develop a coherent xWDM network evolution strategy and network architecture that identifies optimal technology selection and introduction points resulting in:
• Improved network performance
• The lowest cost/Mb/Km for service level transport
• Minimized lifecycle costs, and
• Enhanced support of new and growing converged voice, video, data and mobile services
• Work with engineering communities (including Service Delivery, Network Operations, and Network Econometrics) as well as Marketing, Regulatory, and Finance departments in identifying long and medium term technology and product plans
• Maintain strategic technology and vendor roadmaps
• Evaluate current and future complementary and competitive technologies, and determine their impact on business
• Develop and maintain a network evolution strategy and network architecture for IPTV distribution that results in:
• A flexible network architecture capable of supporting both a broadcast and fully unicast IPTV distribution model
• A network architecture capable of being easily extended to meet rapid capacity demands
• An economical and technically balanced architecture that leverages emerging technology to reduce operational expense while at the same time capitalizes existing network assets
• Distill network requirements from application specifications and document the effect of application features and functionality on the underlying network infrastructure
Educational and Professional Requirements
• Minimum of five years experience in product development or technology planning of telecom transport networks
• Extensive experience in embedded systems preferred.
• Prior work experience at an ILEC or CLEC telecommunications operator is an asset
• A Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (ideally Electrical), an advanced degree MSc Engineering or MBA is an asset
• Professional Engineer designation desired.
• Eligibility for registration in A.P.E.G.G.A
• Extensive knowledge in transport network technologies and their evolution, including DWDM, ROADM, SONET, G.709, IMS, MPLS, IP, and Ethernet
• Thorough understanding of outside plant telecom infrastructure an asset
• Experience with econometrics and network modeling is mandatory
• Familiarity with NORTEL transport equipment, Cisco, Juniper and Alcatel IP equipment is an asset
• Working knowledge of standards bodies an asset
• Knowledge of peripheral systems, as well as OSS and BSS systems an asset
• Strong organizational and planning skills required, including the ability to manage several complex tasks simultaneously
• The ability to analyze both linear and orthogonally view points related to network architecture and strategy issues
• The ability to be innovative, define and refine sometimes ambiguous requests and deliverables
• Exceptional written and verbal communications skills
• Excellent presentation and leadership skills
