Project Line Width and Frequency Response Characterization of DS DBR Laser in a Coherent Optical Network
The project involves the characterisation of the DS-DBR laser for transmission and detection of coherently modulated data formats under fast wavelength switching. It demonstrates the use of a fast tunable digital coherent receiver will be used for the reception of the PDM QPSK signals. The Line width and Frequency Response are characterized and compared with each other.
Skills Developed
Programming skills
A good understanding of matlab with signal processing and Lab view for national instrument is needed to write codes for processing the digital signals.
Electrical Circuit design
A good knowledge of circuit design is required to analyse the optical subsystem design, characterisation and physical layer implementation.
System Modelling
Modelling is needed to test the design before implementing the real circuit.
Digital Signal processing
A good understanding of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for coherent optical network, analogue/digital design is needed to understand the project.
Measurement Techniques
The Research used several measurement techniques such as the tuning maps, dynamic phase noise measurements and switching times to obtain the desired results. Also, it requires the use of equipments like the optical spectrum analyzer, Tektronix Oscilloscope, Agilent Instruments, Signal generator for optical testing and measurement.
Project Management
The project required a lot of tasks like the optical subsystem design, characterisation and physical layer implementation which had to be planned, organised and managed to achieve the desired goal.
Research Skills
A background review of previous work is needed to understand advanced modulation format (PDM-QPSK) for 100Gb/s+ optical networks.
Team work and Communication Skills
The research was carried out in collaboration with a team which required effective communication to achieve the set goals.
