China Unicom Wants iPad

China Unicom (SHSE: 600050), one of the three Chinese telecom carriers, is testing TV service for Apple's iPad on the Website of iPhone.wo.com.cn, a move that is thought of paying the way for introducing iPad 3G any time soon.
Designed especially for iPhone users, the Website provides iPhone users with a wide selection of video content. It is testing high-definition programs of CCTV 1 and CCTV News, two channels under China Central Television, the national TV station of the country.

China Unicom chairman Chang Xiaobing once showed his interest to introduce iPad. And as a strategic partner of Apple, China Unicom is already in talks with Apple about the issue.

iPad comes with two versions: the WiFi version and the 3G+WiFi version. The 3G version is based on WCDMA, so Apple will have to join hands with China Unicom, the WCDMA carrier in China. And the WiFi version may not show up on shelves in China for the country's national wireless Internet standard is WAPI.
