3G Leading to Growth in M2M Market: ABI Research

According to the study, the cellular M2M communication market has had fluctuating fortunes. While 2007 was a 'good year', 2008 was witness to a drastic decline in shipment volumes and revenues. However, as 3G gained more significance, the market seems to have picked up and it is estimated to be worth $3.8 billion in 2015.

ABI Research practice director Sam Lucero that in spite of growth in 2009, revenue was still below that of 2007. However, currently, there were indications of an upward path, but the modest growth in shipments would not be sufficient to ensure revenue levels to increase those of 2007.

He continued to state that falling ASPs were the offshoots of an already crowded market becoming squeezed due to the entry of new vendors, particularly from the Asia-pacific region.

On the Merger- Acquisition side, Lucero cited concrete examples of Wavecom, and Gemalto,and said that there appeared to be some activity, which could lead to positive results if the companies focus on differentiating the market offers with end-end platforms.
