Verizon expands its 3G network coverage

Verizon Wireless announced on Tuesday the expansion of its 3G network with the activation of a new cell site in Mercersburg.

The new site increases coverage and capacity throughout the borough of Mercersburg, as well as north along Pa. 16 to Charlestown Road and Pa. 75 to Orchard Road, south along Pa. 16 to Christy Road and in the areas west of the borough to Charlestown Road.

Since the company was formed, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $60 billion -- $5.7 billion on average every year -- to increase the coverage and capacity of its network and to add new services. The company's ongoing network investment in the region now totals more than $1.5 billion.

"We've always believed even the most advanced cell phone is only as good as the network it runs on," said Mario Turco, president of Verizon Wireless' Philadelphia Tri-State Region. "Our 3G high-speed Mobile Broadband network is the largest and most reliable in the United States, and field tests are under way that will enable us to become the first wireless company to offer commercial Long Term Evolution-based 4G service in the U.S., starting in 2010."
