KPN to use CDMA450 network for M2M, paper says

Dutch telecoms group KPN (or Royal KPN) plans to offer machine-to-machine (M2M) services over a new CDMA450 network it is rolling out, Telecompaper reports without citing its source. Under the plan, the Dutch incumbent will use CDMA technology in the 450MHz band which it says has a number of key benefits when it comes to M2M: namely, it will provide high speed data transmission but will require a lower number of base stations to provide nationwide and good indoor coverage. KPN purchased the rights to use frequencies in the 450MHz band through the takeover of Nozema Services in March 2006. At the time, the Netherlands Mergers and Monopolies Authority (NMa) approved KPN’s takeover of the Dutch radio and TV broadcaster Nozema, on condition that the PTO sell a portion of the latter’s transmission masts. KPN paid EUR75 million for the company to develop it into a provider of different media such as high speed internet access and IPTV, using frequency licences that carry requirements for rollout and commercial services coverage. It is understood the licence is also limited to so-called public access mobile radio (PAMR) services, or services for closed-user groups. The paper says a spokesman for KPN has confirmed the telco’s willingness to meet these rollout requirements, which will be assessed again at the end of this year. At that date KPN expects to have deployed the new M2M service across all provinces, the spokesman added.
