Operate as a member of a team of Switch Engineers tasked with ensuring the fault-free operation of the interfaces of all VAS elements in the network with the MSC’s and IGF’s.

Maintain switch-related VAS databases, and VAS software and hardware configuration documentation.

Maintain the SS7 configuration, translation and routing tables of all VAS nodes to allow optimal traffic handling and fault tolerance within the network as dictated by the Switch Manager.

Ensure that all VAS related switch alarms are audited and promptly serviced.

Ensure that trouble tickets are generated for all faults and incidents relating to VAS, and that the Switch manager is kept informed of such.

Perform routine VAS related O&M tasks as specified by the Switch Manager.

Participate in test and fault investigation activities as required by the Switch Manager.

Participate in VAS CMF and upgrade/enhancement activities as required by the Switch Manager.

Keep track of all VAS related CMF’s executed on the switches

Extract VAS Performance Data, CDR’s and Alarm logs for delivery to the teams that need them

Ensure that regular Backups are taken for all VAS nodes.

International Roaming configuration and troubleshooting.

SMS, VMS, configuration and troubleshooting. (Comverse VMS/SMSC platform experience highly desirable if possible) knowledge of Nokia SMS platform will also be a plus.

Testing and Troubleshooting interconnections between the switch and other network entities, such as MW, VSAT, SMS, VMS equipment and also connections to other Operators and International Gateways and PBX’s.

Skills Description

A minimum of 2 years experience in technical support of VAS elements within a GSM environment, preferably with knowledge of Siemens D900 SR11 switches, Comverse VMS and SMSC platforms, and Nokia SMS platform. Experience with any other major vendors’ equipment will also be considered.

Experience of a mobile/cellular/GSM communications company in a developing country setting.

Possess a good general knowledge of all elements of a GSM network and their interaction with one another. (Power, Microwave, VSAT, RF, BSS, SCP etc) Knowledge of and experience with GPRS/EDGE will also be of great advantage.

Ability to interpret and take action on Network Performance Statistics and measurements.

SS7 expertise for CAMEL, MAP, and ISUP signaling, expertise with SS7 protocol analyzers (preferably but not necessarily Tektronix K12 series)

Should possess good interpersonal skills

Good verbal and written English communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with maintenance and support personnel of both the vendors and AWCC.

A team player with a strong commitment transferring knowledge to other staff.

Strong analytical skills and the ability to isolate the root cause of problems.

Education

A minimum of a 2’nd class Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.

Vendor training up to TAC2 level on VAS equipment. (training from any vendor will be considered)
